Introduction and Reference
National Jewelry and Jade Quality Supervision and Inspection Center (NGTC), Shanghai Diamond Exchange (SDE), Hong Kong Diamond Federation (DFHK) and five leading international organizations/institutions in the diamond industry, the World Jewellery Federation (CIBJO), Diamond Producers Association (DPA), Indian Jewelry Promotion Council (GJEPC), World Diamond Council (WDC) and World Diamond Exchange Alliance (WFDB) jointly developed this guide to encourage all industry institutions, organizations and traders to be comprehensive, fair and effective Use clear and understandable terms for diamonds, synthetic diamonds and diamond imitations.
This "Guide to Diamond Terminology" is a reference document for the use of diamond and synthetic diamond terminology in the diamond and jewelry industry. It is based on the following two internationally recognized standards: the ISO18323 standard ("Jewelry-Consumer Confidence in the Diamond Industry") ) And "World Jewellery Federation (CIBJO) Diamond Blue Book", refer to relevant Chinese standards GB/T 16552-2017 "Name of Jewelry and Jade", GB/T 16553-2017 "Identification of Jewelry and Jade", GB/T 16554-2017 " Diamond Grading.
Diamonds are naturally-occurring minerals of an equiaxed crystal system composed mainly of carbon atoms; "diamonds" usually refer to natural diamonds.
Synthetic diamonds refer to products made partly or wholly by man, whose physical properties, chemical composition and crystal structure are basically the same as natural diamonds.
Imitation diamonds, also known as diamond imitations, refer to jewelry, jade, or other materials that are similar in appearance to diamonds, but differ in chemical composition, physical properties, or structure.
Natural gemstones are the output of nature. It has beautiful appearance, durability, rarity and intrinsic value, and can be processed into jewelry single crystal (may contain double crystal).
When referring to synthetic diamonds:
When referring to synthetic diamonds, please use the following approved qualifier: "synthesis".
Abbreviations such as "laboratory production" and "laboratory manufacturing" are not allowed.
The following words must not be used: "Cultivated Diamond" and "Cultivated Diamond", because "Cultivated" and "Cultivated" can only be used for organic/biological products.
The following words must not be used: "True", "True", "Precious", "True" and "Natural" because these words can only be used for natural minerals and gemstones.
According to the definition of terms, diamonds are natural. Therefore, when referring to diamonds, the word “diamond” can be used, and no qualifiers are necessary. "Natural diamond" and "diamond" have the same meaning to distinguish them from synthetic diamonds.
The following ambiguous words must not be used: "naturally processed diamonds" and "processed natural diamonds", but "processed diamonds" should be used.
